Reel VS Pictures on Social Media by Joe Cignetti

If you’ve been posting on Instagram and Facebook and wondering why your photos just aren’t getting the same traction they used to, you’re not imagining it. Reels have completely changed the game  and it’s something almost every business owner and salon professional is noticing.

A few years ago, a strong image and a good caption could carry your content a long way. Now, the platforms have shifted. Instagram and Facebook are no longer just photo-sharing apps they’re entertainment platforms. Their priority is keeping people scrolling, watching, and engaging for as long as possible, and video simply does that better than static images.

That doesn’t mean photos are no longer important. They still play a big role in your content mix. Photos are ideal for clean branding, before-and-after shots, price lists, announcements, testimonials, and creating a visually consistent grid that reflects your brand. They help build trust with people who are already following you and reinforce your professionalism and credibility.

The difference is reach. Static images are mostly shown to your existing audience. They’re a gentle reminder that you’re there a familiar face popping up in the feed. But they’re not designed to introduce your business to large numbers of new people.

Reels are where discovery happens.

Both Instagram and Facebook are heavily prioritising reels because video keeps people watching longer. Reels are pushed to non-followers, featured on Explore pages, and shared far more easily than photos. That means one well-shot reel can reach hundreds or even thousands of people who’ve never seen your brand before. For most businesses, that level of exposure simply isn’t possible with a single image anymore.

But the real power of reels goes beyond the algorithm.

Video creates connection in a way photos can’t. It allows people to feel your energy, your confidence, your attention to detail, and your personality. They can see how you work, how you move, how you care. A blonde transformation, a seamless blend, a smooth blow-dry, a quick styling tip, or a behind-the-scenes moment tells a story and stories build trust.

People don’t just book services or buy products. They book people. Reels shorten the gap between discovering your business and trusting you enough to take the next step.

Reels are also incredibly flexible. They don’t have to be complicated, scripted, or time-consuming. Some of the highest-performing reels are simple: hands working through hair, tools in use, product application, a transformation reveal, or a quiet behind-the-scenes moment in the salon. No talking. No trends. Just real work, done well.

Facebook, in particular, has leaned hard into reels. Many businesses are seeing stronger reach on Facebook reels than on Instagram — even with smaller followings. There’s less competition, a massive audience, and a platform actively rewarding video content. If your Instagram feels slow, Facebook reels are often where momentum builds.

The most effective strategy isn’t choosing reels or photos — it’s using both with intention.

Reels are your growth tool. They help you get seen, reach new audiences, and build familiarity quickly. Photos are your credibility tool. They support your brand, showcase your results, and create consistency. When used together, they create a strong, well-rounded presence that works even when the algorithm shifts again.

And if being on camera feels uncomfortable, start where you are. Film your hands. Film the movement. Film the process. Perfection isn’t the goal  consistency is. Showing up regularly, in a way that feels natural to you, will always outperform waiting until everything feels “ready.”

Because in today’s social media landscape, presence builds trust and trust builds bookings, sales, and long-term growth.
